Seminar on Urban Planning in Motorcycle-Dependent Cities

On July 25, 2024, the Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) program at the Vietnamese-German University (VGU), in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, hosted a successful seminar titled “Urban Issues and Urban Planning Tool Application in the Context of Motorcycle Dependent Cities – The Case of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.” The event brought together researchers, students, and professionals to explore innovative urban planning solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by cities heavily dependent on motorcycles.

The seminar kicked off with a warm welcome from Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Hieu, the Academic Coordinator of the SUD program. This set the stage for an afternoon of insightful presentations and engaging discussions.

Presentations

    1. Understanding Walking Factors in Motorcycle Dependent Cities
      Presenter: MA. Truc-Duy T. Tran
      MA. Tran provided an in-depth analysis of the factors that influence pedestrian behavior in cities like Ho Chi Minh City, where motorcycles are the dominant mode of transportation. Her research highlighted the challenges and proposed strategies to improve walking conditions and pedestrian safety.

    2. Novel Urban Design Approaches for Healthy Sustainable Cities
      Presenter: Prof. Marcus White
      Prof. White introduced the PedCatch tool, an innovative multicriteria assessment tool designed to enhance walking quality. He demonstrated how this tool can be applied to urban design to promote healthier and more sustainable city environments.

    3. (Re)production of Small Urban Spaces: Streets, Laneways, and Foreigners in Vietnam
      Presenter: Dr. Dinh Quoc Phuong
      Dr. Dinh explored the reproduction of small urban spaces in Vietnamese cities, focusing on streets, laneways, and the interaction of these spaces with foreign influences. His presentation shed light on the importance of preserving the unique characteristics of these spaces while adapting to modern urban needs.

The seminar concluded with a lively Q&A session, where attendees had the opportunity to engage with the speakers, ask questions, and discuss the practical applications of the presented research. The discussions underscored the importance of integrating innovative urban planning tools and strategies to address the complex challenges faced by motorcycle-dependent cities.
