The 4th International Student Conference on Sustainable Urban Development (SUD 2026) Successfully Concluded at VGU

On 29 May 2026, the Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) Study Program at the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) successfully organized the 4th International Student Conference on Sustainable Urban Development (SUD 2026) at the VGU Main Campus. The conference brought together students, researchers, academics, and professionals from various universities and institutions in Vietnam and abroad to exchange ideas and showcase innovative research on sustainable urban development.

This year’s conference received 20 abstract submissions covering a wide range of topics related to urban planning, mobility, housing, environmental management, ESG, logistics, and sustainable urban transformation. Following the review process, 13 papers were selected for oral presentations and 7 contributions were featured in the poster exhibition. The conference attracted participation from universities and institutions including the Vietnamese-German University (VGU), University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), University of Economics and Finance (UEF), University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City (UAH), University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), INSA Hauts-de-France (France), and Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany).

The conference commenced with welcome remarks from Dr. Nguyen Hong Vi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, followed by opening remarks from Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Hieu, Coordinator of the Sustainable Urban Development Program. The keynote speech delivered by Dr. Pham Thai Son highlighted current challenges and opportunities in sustainable urban transformation and interdisciplinary approaches to urban development.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in four thematic sessions:

  • Transformative Urban Space and Service
  • Peri-urban Development
  • Housing Development and ESG
  • Regional Perspectives: Carbon Tax, Water and Tourism

The presentations explored diverse topics such as transit-oriented development around Ben Thanh Metro Station, smart public spaces, sustainable logistics, agrarian urbanism, co-living housing models, ESG integration in business and construction industries, willingness to pay carbon taxes, microplastic pollution, and urban tourism impacts. The conference also featured a poster exhibition showcasing innovative student research and design projects.

One of the highlights of SUD 2026 was the strong interdisciplinary and international participation, providing students with a valuable platform to present their work, receive feedback from academics and peers, and expand their professional networks. The event further strengthened collaboration among universities while promoting student-led research on pressing urban sustainability challenges.

The conference concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Ha Thuc Vien, Vice President of VGU, followed by certificate presentation and networking activities.

The Sustainable Urban Development Program would like to express its sincere appreciation to all presenters, participants, moderators, reviewers, supporting departments, and partner institutions for contributing to the success of SUD 2026.

We look forward to welcoming participants again at future SUD events and continuing to foster dialogue, innovation, and collaboration toward more sustainable and resilient cities.
